Summit Camera
| The summit camera is housed in an all-weather enclosure installed in the AWS. At present the camera is directed towards the Northern Corries with the aim of being able to monitor snow cover on the plateau. The camera is under testing at present, so there may be significant downtime.
Image on the right (16 Nov 2007) shows a typical image when the summit is clear of cloud. Here we're looking south-west over the northern corries.

Low-level CameraThe camera is sited at low level to give information on cloud cover and snow level, these being of meteorological and general interest. It's also kinder to the camera than the summit location. We are grateful to the Scottish Sports Council for funding the equipment purchase and to Blyth Wright of the Scottish Avalanche Information Service (SAIS) at Glenmore Lodge for hosting the camera installation.
Technical and geographical detail will be added in due course. In brief, the camera is a Wincam. One model from Stardot Technologies, costing about 200 pounds sterling, and is sited at Glenmore Lodge (map ref 986095), 6km NNW of the Cairn Gorm summit (map ref 006040). The camera is pointing a little due west of south. There is some uncertainty here because the camera is simply sitting on an office window-sill and gets moved inadvertently from time to time. The computer is a 486DX33, with 8Mb RAM, running the Linux operating system. Linux has behaved superbly, I might add.
