Data Archive

This page contains archived weather station data from Cairn Gorm. You are free to use it in any way you wish, but please reference us as the source of any data you use, and send us a copy of offprints of any publications if possible. By doing this you will help to ensure the continued viability of the weather station.

Weather Station Data Archive Quality Control
AWS data is stored in monthly files as raw text. A file called datayear also exists containing all the data for the year in question. The columns of data are as follows,

Julian Day No, Year, Time, Mean Wind Speed, Max Gust, Min Wind Speed, Wind Dir, Std. Deviation in Wind Dir, Temperature 1, and Temperature 2.

1990  1991  1992  1993  1994  1995

The wind speed unit is metres per second.

The data up to the end of 1995 have been processed by a quality control program, which marks questionable data with a Q. Bad data are removed and replaced with a warning token of the form text R. However we can make no guarantee that all errors have been found, and you should bear this in mind when using the data .

The data format was changed from 1996 onward and is the same as the text form of weather information.
1996  1997  1998  1999  2000  2001  2002  2004  2005  2006  2007  2008  2009  Current Year

N.B. The wind speed unit here is miles per hour.

The instruments are exposed for 3 minutes every half hour, with the mean wind speed being the 2.5 minute mean of readings made every 2.5 seconds. The max gust and the min wind speed are the highest and lowest readings over the 2.5 minute period. The unit of wind speed measurement is meters per second up to 1995 and mph for 1996 onwards. Wind direction is measured in degrees, with the standard deviation in the wind direction over the 2.5 minutes also being given. Finally two temperature measurements are also made in degrees Celsius.
