Collaborating in Research
Our research in the Physics Department is highly multi-disciplinary. With topics ranging from theoretical studies to applied technology we engage with many sectors of industry and academia.
The department is one of six members of the Scottish Universities Physics Alliance (SUPA) who have come together to form a research alliance in Physics. The aim is to place Scotland at the forefront of research in Physics through an agreed national strategy, an inter-institutional management structure, and co-ordinated promotion and pursuit of excellence. SUPA will pool and enhance Scotland's strongest Physics research areas and will develop as a world leader in Physics, creating the largest group of Physics researchers in the UK.
The department's applied research in precision optical, electronic and miniature systems is also encompassed in the Edinburgh Research Partnership (ERP) in Engineering and Mathematics. A joint initiative between the University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University comprises five jointly owned research institutes and an associated joint postgraduate school. Physics research in applied optics, lasers, micromachining, and nanotechnology are represented in the Integrated Systems research institute.
Industrial application of Laser Material Processing and Optical Inspection is represented as part of the Scottish Manufacturing Institute. The Photonics stream comprises collaborative work between Physics and Mechanical Engineering at Heriot-Watt, and several industrial collaborators.
